The improved quality of life has determined an extraordinary expansion of longevity changing the population structure and exponentially amplifying the aging people. As a consequence, the progressive increase in degenerative diseases and related disabilities will determine the impossibility to sustain health system overspending in most countries. In this respect, new cost-effective solutions to enhance the quality and quantity of healthcare creating an equal access to the most advanced diagnostic and treatment procedures by all individuals independently of the geographic and economic conditions are some of the compelling needs. However, the application of very advanced technologies to healthcare will require further relevant investments and cannot be a concern of the bio-medical field alone, but must involve the knowledge accumulated in a multiplicity of fields, such as mathematics, ICT, material science and engineering.
